Flirtin' with the Monster - Ellen Hopkins (Editor)
ISBN: 1933771674
Publication Date: 2009-05-12
In Crank and Glass, Ellen Hopkins introduces us to Kristina, a young meth addict. Told in first person narrative, these best-selling novels-in-verse chronicle Kristina’s introduction to methamphetamines and her consequent decent into drug addiction. Flirtin’ with the Monster, is a collection of essays written by other authors, a drug counselor, a judge and members of Kristina’s family that discuss meth addiction and the novels. Ms. Hopkins introduction is a frank account of why she wrote these books, why she shared her very personal story (Kristina is her daughter) and why she tries to help others today. Kristina’s story is heartbreaking but as the essays point out books like Ellen Hopkins’ speak to young people. Kristina’s point of view meets teens where they are and takes them to a place where there is no happy ending. Flirtin’ with the Monster is a great companion to Ms. Hopkins’ novels and worth reading by parents or anyone working with young adults. -Review by Molly Dopheide

Defending Jacob - William Landay
ISBN: 0385344228
Publication Date: 2012-01-31
Defending Jacob by former district attorney William Landay is a murder mystery/thriller/courtroom drama that addresses a number of timely issues: bullying, the controversial search for a "murder gene", children tried as adults, and the impact on a family when a child is accused of murder.

How far would you go to protect your child? The father in this story is the prosecutor in a murder investigation of the stabbing death of a 14 year old student. Imagine his devastation when the evidence begins to point to his own son. The parents learn, too late, that Jacob was the target of constant bullying by the victim.

Landay's skill at characterization draws us into the lives of this tortured family: the overwhelmed and depressed mother, the father too long in denial, and the sullen non-communicative teenager that many parents have known. But it is the twisting plot and shocking ending that really make the novel memorable.
