Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Free federal and state tax preparation for:

  • People who generally make $64,000 or less (either single filers or total combined for married filing jointly)
  • Persons with disabilities
  • State returns can be filed along with Federal returns (other states besides Kansas can be prepared)
  • Returns from 2023 only – no prior year returns
VITA services are not only free, they are also a reliable and trusted source for preparing tax returns. All VITA volunteer tax preparers must take and pass tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards. This training includes maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of all taxpayer information. In addition to requiring volunteers to certify their knowledge of the tax laws, the IRS requires a quality review check for every return prepared at a VITA site prior to filing.
