Temporary Change to Library Hours

Dear Library Patron,

Like many employers, private and public, the Leavenworth Public Library is having serious difficulty filling vacant positions. Two have been open for months, one since last year. Positions have been advertised several times and we have not received applications. All told, the Library has six open positions that add up to 45 percent of the hours budgeted for providing direct public service, 20 percent of the total staff hours budgeted for the entire year. This is a huge gap.

The Board of Trustees has taken an unprecedented step to address this unprecedented circumstance. The Library will be closed on Sundays in May, June and July. It is not action that was taken lightly, other solutions were considered but none of them solved the basic problem. There are simply not enough employees to cover a 68-hour, seven day a week public service schedule. Closing Sundays is the least disruptive approach, one that allows the greatest share of regular services to continue as normal.

Events that have already been arranged in the Jahn Meeting on Sunday, May 1 and Sunday, May 15 will take place as scheduled.
