2024 Income Tax Information

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Free federal and state tax preparation for:

  • People who generally earn $67,000 or less (either single filers or total combined for married filing jointly)
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Active duty military
  • State returns can be filed along with Federal returns (other states besides Kansas can be prepared)
  • Returns from 2024 only – no prior year returns
VITA services are not only free, they are also a reliable and trusted source for preparing tax returns. All VITA volunteer tax preparers must take and pass tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards. This training includes maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of all taxpayer information. In addition to requiring volunteers to certify their knowledge of the tax laws, the IRS requires a quality review check for every return prepared at a VITA site prior to filing.
Appointments for 2024 tax returns are now available.

The Library’s 2025 VITA site will operate on the following days and times:

  • Every Monday in February and March from 5-8 p.m.: drop offs only; patrons will be notified when returns are ready to be picked up
  • Every Tuesday in February and March from 5-8 p.m.: 1 hour appointments
  • Every Saturday in February and March: 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m.: 1 hour appointments

In case of Library closure due to inclement weather, appointments will be rescheduled.

All taxpayers using VITA services must complete an intake form in order for their tax returns to be processed. The intake form is available to download (see link below) and printed forms will be available at the Library. Taxpayers must bring their completed intake form to their appointment in order for the volunteers to proceed with tax preparation.

Filing Your Own Taxes

The IRS now offers Direct File, a way to file your federal taxes online – for free – directly to the IRS. Direct File is an option if you lived and worked in a participating state, which includes Kansas, for all of 2024.
